Dal Makhani Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole black lentils
  • 1/4 cup kidney beans
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp cream
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnish

Dal Makhani Recipe 

  1. Soak the whole black lentils and kidney beans in water for at least 6-8 hours or overnight.

  2. Drain the soaked lentils and beans and rinse them with fresh water.

  3. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked lentils and beans along with enough water to cover them. Pressure cook for 8-10 whistles or until they are soft and fully cooked.

  4. In a pan, heat butter and add cumin seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add the chopped onion and green chilies and sauté until the onion turns translucent.

  5. Add ginger-garlic paste to the pan and sauté for a minute.

  6. Add the tomato puree to the pan and cook until the tomatoes are soft and cooked through.

  7. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes.

  8. Add the cooked lentils and beans to the pan and mix well.

  9. Add cream and garam masala to the pan and cook for another 5-10 minutes on low heat until the dal is fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.

  10. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with naan or rice.

     

Tips:

  • You can use canned kidney beans if you don't have dried beans on hand.
  • Adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  • You can also add some kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves) to the dal for additional flavor.
